15 Minutes on Fridays and Other Time Management Strategies

By Jody Long

As an event planner, you’re probably pulled in a lot of different directions. From fielding calls from caterers and answering audio visual questions, to making sure every last event details is perfect, you’ve got a lot on your plate. Being organized is one of the most important skills as a professional, juggling different meetings, conferences, and more. This is why time management is crucial, especially when planning out how you’re going to make the most of each workday.

Here are some other ways you can organize your day better, to ensure the most efficiency.

  • Arrive on time. Getting to work at your scheduled time sets the tone for the rest of your day. Even if you work from home be sure to get on a schedule.
  • Create your to-do list. Determine what must be done today, and what is a priority.
  • Don’t forget your voicemail. Because much of our day now revolves around our cell phones and computers, our offices phones tend to get pushed to the back burner. You don’t want to miss an important voicemail.

To make your Monday morning run just a bit smoother, you need to start on Friday. This way you have a fresh start when you return on Monday (or whatever day you start your week), and are ready for the day and week ahead. Take the last 15 minutes of your day to clean up your desk or work area.

  • Put everything back in its place, and finish up any last minute business.
  • Clear your desk.  This will help for your following morning… a clear desk means a clear mind.
  • Listen to any unchecked voice mails. Did you finally get back to that first voicemail you couldn’t tend to first thing in the morning?
  • Check any last minute emails.
  • Throw away any trash.
  • Cross of the things you’ve accomplished from your to-do list that day. This will help you figure out your priorities for the next day.
  • Turn the calendar to Monday, push in your chair, and enjoy your weekend.

Cleaning up will help ensure you come back to a neat work area on Monday and are ready to start a new week. You could even use these tips to use at the end of every day, not just Friday’s.

“He who every morning plans the transactions of that day and follows that plan carries a thread that will guide him through the labyrinth of the most busy life.”
